April is Autism Awareness month! I am a psychology major and have friends and family that have autism, so this is a subject near and dear to my heart. It is so unfortunate how people view mental illness in general, but when someone has autism, people think all they have is a weird problem that they need to grow up and get over. Well, guys, let me tell you, autism is something you can't just "get over" it's a part of someone just like we all have personality traits that may not be "desirable" that are a part of us. We need to stop viewing people with autism as people with only negative traits and people with strengths and weaknesses that are just different than ours.
If you want to be involved and help get banish the stigma behind autism and mental illnesses, the best way is to spread awareness and start discussions. Awareness begins when conversation begins. I just gave a small roundup of products that can be worked into everyday interactions and routines to create conversation about autism and the people who have it. A person is NOT their deficit. Let's ban stigma and help people with autism feel loved and appreciated!
